Nails: Butter London Victoriana

This week I'm wearing another Butter London (www.butterlondon.com) nail polish in Victoriana. It's a pale greyed-out blue with lots of silver microglitter in it. The formula was thicker than Thames, so I only needed two coats for full opacity. It applied like a dream and drying time wasn't too bad either. One layer of topcoat and I was done!

It's greyer than it appears in this picture.

Blog giveaway: Prettymaking

Hi guys. This is a quick, short one to let you know that Mandy over at Prettymaking is having an amazing giveaway. She's giving away an Urban Decay Naked palette, Boscia cleanser and Urban Decay makeup setting spray minis, as well as a full-sized Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey and Make Up For Ever Aqua Liner in #14.

I'd love to win, of course, but it's only fair that I let you guys know about it too, especially you Aussie girls who have no real way to get your hands on a Naked palette! Giveaway aside, I urge you to take a look at Mandy's blog at http://prettymaking.blogspot.com/, as she has some of the most gorgeous makeup looks I've ever seen.

Good luck to those who enter and good luck to me as well. :)

Fun looks with my new palettes

As promised, I've had a play with my new Sleek and Wet n Wild palettes over the last few days. Without further adieu, here are some of the looks I came up with. First, just one look using the Wet n Wild Comfort Zone palette.

The Comfort Zone palette.

Below, I've used the green Eyelid shade all over the lid, the left Crease shade in the crease and the left Definer shade in the deep crease. The right Definer shade is along the lower lashline and on the outer quarter of the lid. I used the right Browbone colour on the inner corner and the inner quarter of the lower lashline.

Review: L'Oreal La Couleur Infallible eyeshadow

L'Oreal released a series of eyeshadows called La Couleur Infallible a couple months ago here in Australia. I'm sure how long they've been available overseas. They retail for $19.95 each, which is quite steep. However, in the latest Priceline catalogue, all L'Oreal lip and eye cosmetics are buy one get one free, so I decided to get the two colours I'd been eyeing off: Burning Black and Purple Obsession. The only really disappointing thing about the range is that there are only nine colours to choose from. Hopefully more will be added.

Left: Burning Black. Right: Purple Obsession.

Nails: Butter London Thames

For my first Butter London (www.butterlondon.com) nail polish, I decided to try Thames. I recently bought four: Branwen's Feather, Victoriana and HRH in addition to Thames. They retail for US$14 and are available in Australia for $22 each (that's $2 more than OPI, just FYI). Thames is a beautiful metallic green that's quite bright and not as dark as some others I've seen.

Sorry about the lighting: the polish is very definitely green and not blue as it appears here.

Palettes: Sleek & Wet n Wild

Today the postman delivered the Sleek i-Divine palette (Original) and Wet n Wild Color Icon 8-pan palette (Comfort Zone). I know I'm a little late to the party on these, but both Sleek and Wet n Wild are difficult to find in Australia. I ordered my goodies from Crush Cosmetics (www.crushcosmetics.com.au).

The Wet n Wild Comfort Zone palette.

The Color Icon palette was $14.95. Each shadow is labelled according to where it should be applied. I wouldn't necessarily wear them this way, since all of the shadows are shimmery and it may be a bit too much to wear them all over. However, the selection of shades is excellent and I'll be able to create tons of looks with this.

Eyeshadow: ModelCo Island Fever Palette

So here's a quick look I did using all three colours in the ModelCo Island Fever palette I got yesterday. They all applied really smoothly, especially the navy colour, which surprised me because it was kind of patchy when I swatched it. A very light swipe was all I needed and it blended easily on the eye. I think the shimmery gold and green make a nice contrast to the darkness and almost matte texture of the blue.

This is my first time using ModelCo and they're pretty nice shadows. I know a lot of people rave about their mascara, so maybe I'll give that a go some time in the future. Anyway, the Island Fever palette is nice and small, and the colours in there offer enough variety for a couple of different looks. This is definitely one I'd take away with me for the weekend.

ModelCo freebie & discount coupon

This one's only for the Aussie girls. Sorry! The latest issue of Cleo magazine (August 2011) has a free ModelCo eyeshadow trio on the front. There's a choice of three palettes: dark smokey colours, neutral browns and a more colourful trio. Each one is worth $39, so $7.95 isn't bad. I don't read Cleo, but I'll make an exception this month!

There are three palettes to choose from, each worth $39.

Rant: crappy shipping

I recently ordered some Butter London nail polishes from an Australian online sale site. It was $13.50 a bottle, rather than the usual $22 a bottle (this is why I haven't tried Butter London before -- too damn expensive). The package containing four polishes arrived the other day in a bubble mailer. But you know what? They weren't individually wrapped. You guessed it, a light shower of glass shards sprinkled onto the tablecloth when I tipped them out of the bag. The bottles had banged together during transit and surprise, surprise: they chipped. Ugh! Surely it doesn't a bloody genius to figure out that glass bottles together in the same package will break? Luckily, they only chipped chunks of glass from the corners of the bottles, so none of the nail polish leaked out or anything. Use your brains, people!

Nails: A England Lady of the Lake

Hooray! My nails are back in nail polish-wearing form! They're all quite short, but I was absolutely desperate to try one of my new A England (www.a-england.co.uk) polishes. I recently ordered three from the Mythicals collection: Lady of the Lake, Avalon and Tristam. At the time, they were offering free worldwide postage, which is why I went a little nuts and ordered three polishes from a brand I'd never tried. Each bottle is £9, which is around $14. That's cheaper than a bottle of OPI.

When I had a look at the web site, I fell in love instantly. Lady of the Lake is the first one that went into my cart. It's a dark blue-based purple holographic polish. I don't know if you guys are aware of how hard it is to find dark holos: you may have seen my post about China Glaze DV8: that's about as dark as they get. Until I found A England! Tristam is a dark blue holo and Avalon is a bright metallic purple.

Dark purple holo! So gorgeous.

I can't rave enough about amazing this was to apply. I honestly think this is the smoothest, loveliest nail polish I've ever applied. Two coats is all it took and both coats dried quite quickly. There were no bubbles, no glugginess, no visible brushstrokes or anything. Just an amazing, even coverage. I'm totally in love with the colour too. However, I can't wait to try the other two either!

Dark purple hololiciousness. Droolworthy!

I know it's a big call, but I'm going to have to say that this is the best nail polish formula I've ever tried. Maybe it's because it's a holo, so I'll reserve full judgement until I've tried a regular metallic formula, but it's amazing. I can't think of anything that's bad about it or that I would change. I'm seriously considering another order and adding to my collection. If you've had reservations about trying A England, I'd say go for it. You won't be disappointed.

Gold Coast update

Well, I'm a little disappointed. The boyfriend and I were actually staying in Coolangatta for a few days and we drove to Surfers Paradise to check out some shops and visit the Del Sol shop for me. It was closed! At 3:30pm on a Thursday. What the? There's was no 'Back in 15 mins' sign or anything to indicate that it was closed for good, so I have no idea what's going on there.

So as promised, here are a couple of (crappy) photos of my new $2 nail polish from KK. It's a hard polish to photograph, so it's best described as a red-based purple with teal and turquoise glitter in it.

It's on it's side so you can see the colour better.

You can see the label here, but the colour of the polish isn't accurate.

The other really dumb thing I did is slam my thumb in the car door. Ouch! Apart from the pain, it started to split the nail right down the middle, so I had to cut it right down before it could split down to the nail bed. This means no nail polish until it grows a little and I can file down the others to match. I'm not keen on drawing attention to the fact that my nails are different sizes!

In other exciting nail-related news, I recently ordered some Butter London (www.butterlondon.com) nail polishes online, so they'll be arriving soon. I also ordered some A England (www.a-england.co.uk) nail polishes. I haven't hauled nail polish like this in ages! Hopefully by the time they all arrive, my nails will all be an even length.

Short getaway

Hi guys. I'm currently up at the Gold Coast with the boyfriend for a few days, so I won't be posting anything much until I get back. I'm hoping to get to the Del Sol shop and get at least one more colour-changing nail polish from there! If I do I'll take photos and post them online. I already scored one super cheap ($2.50) purple nail polish (KK Cosmetics, I think) from a discount store today. I'll take photos of that too and show you both of them together, hopefully. I wonder what else I'll come across? Anyway, speak to you all soon!

Happy 4th of July!

To all my US readers, have a happy 4th of July! I hope you all have a great one. And for anyone participating in any of the online sales, happy hauling!
